    Dream of a Thousand Cats

The Grey Cat asked Tabby Kitten intended to see Siamese Cat, but first Tabby Kitten had to find a way out of the house. She climbed out the upstairs window and jumped across to a nearby tree, where she likely would've fallen to the ground below if not for Grey Cat saving her. Along the way, they were joined by many other cats, who all gathered in the cemetery, where Siamese delivered a message: she was not always a stray cat. She once lived among the humans, but she fooled herself into thinking they were equals. They took care of her, and only wanted her affection in return. During this time, Siamese had a lover. She never saw him again after the one time, but she would never forget, as she became pregnant. Siamese didn't remember her own mother, but she vowed to be different and teach her kittens better. However, her owner took her kittens away in a knapsack bag and threw them into the river. Siamese felt them as they died and knew then that she had lied to herself. They were not equals, rather subordinate. And so, she prayed to the King of Cats and dreamed her way into The Dreaming, where she was confronted by a crow, who explained that if justice and wisdom was what she sought, she would not find it in The Dreaming. However, if revelations is what she was after, then the Crow informed Siamese that there was a cave in the mountain, where she'd find the King of Cats. Siamese walked through the Wood of Ghosts, where she could hear her children calling her, but she walked forward through the cold, the wetness, the darkness, and void. After a time, she found herself at the mountain, guarded by beasts. She explained that she came to see the Cat of Dreams, and while they allowed her to enter, they warned that dreams came at a price. Siamese entered the cave, where she expressed to Dream that a dead crow sent her to the mountains for revelation. She wanted to know how the humans could take her children and why they lived as lesser than. Dream approached and encouraged Siamese to look into his eyes, and in his eyes, she saw the truth, and it transcended her wildest dreams. Many season ago, cats ruled the world, she claimed. They were larger and everything was made for them. But then, one of the humans rose amongst them, inspired by a dream. And he encouraged his people to dream of a world in which humans ruled, but only if enough of them believed. Eventually, word spread among the humans, and one night, enough of them dreamed, and the next day, everything changed: the humans took control and cats became pets. Dream explained that humans didn't change the world, rather they dreamed the world so that it was always in their favor. They changed it from the beginning of all things to the end of time. Siamese awakened that night from her dream, left her home, and spread the good news. And since then, she's traveled from place to place, preaching to cats of a world that could be, but only if enough of them dreamed it; a world where all cats were kings and queens of creation. That was her sole message, which she would repeat until the day she died or until 1,000 cats believed her words and dreamed. While many remained skeptical, Tabby Kitten assured Siamese that she believed. On the walk back home, Grey Cat expressed his skepticism about Siamese's message, doubtful that anyone could get 1,000 cats to do anything at the same time.

    Calliope

August 2018, after giving a writing lecture to his class, Richard Madoc received an important, but unspecified container from a med student named Nora, who confided in Richard, that much like him, she wanted to be a writer, but her parents insisted that she have something to fall back on, so she began studying to be a doctor. All Nora asked was that Richard not tell anyone that he got it from her, and that he sign her book. As for when his next book will be published, he informed her that a release date had not yet been set. With the container in his possession, Richard went to see Erasmus Fry, to whom he confessed that he hadn't written a single word in a year, before handing over what Erasmus described as a "genuine trichino-bezoar," which were generally removed from the stomachs of young woman who developed the habit of investing their own hair, also known as the Rapunzel syndrome. Bezoars were once believed to possess mystical powers; they could remedy poison and heal the sick. Edward IV allegedly survived the effects of a poison wound due solely to the possession of a bezoar. When Erasmus was 27, he visited Mount Helicon and discovered a trove of ancient texts about the Muses and how to control them using moly, sorcerer's garlic, and certain lost rituals. With this knowledge, he managed to gain control of the Greek goddess Calliope, who he had locked away in his cellar. She was the youngest of the nine sister and Homer's muse. In exchange for the bezoar, Erasmus was giving Calliope to Richard, binding her to him, making her unable to run away. Richard was having second thoughts, but Erasmus reminded him that Calliope was thousand of years old and that her sole purpose was to be a Muse. She gave Erasmus glory, fame, among other things, but his time had since passed and he was quite frankly tired of her. Richard took Calliope home and installed a lock on the outside of her bedroom door, to keep her from leaving. However, she warned Richard that she was a goddess and a daughter of Zeus; she wasn't a possession to be kept and traded. She hoped he would set her free, which he assured her he would, but first, he needed her help, her inspiration to be exact, to help him write one book. Calliope chose with whom she shared her gifts and decided against helping Richard. And so, he exited the room, locking her inside, before going downstairs, where he attempted to try and write his novel on his own, but his writer's block was persistent. The following day, Richard sought to woo Calliope with presents, clothes, jewelry, perfumes, etc. but she was not impressed. Calliope explained that an artist was supposed to pray to a Muse, offer vows of service and devotion to the goddesses in exchange for divine inspiration. A true artist did not hold a Muse against her will. Unlike Erasmus, Richard didn't seem too keen on forcing her to inspire him. Calliope recalled her imprisonment; she had returned to Mount Helicon and the sacred springs, where she laid her scroll upon the shore and bathed. Erasmus found it there, read it, and said, "Calliope, you may call me master." And then he burned her scroll, which bounded her to Erasmus, and now to Richard, unless he said the word to free her, so that she could be as free as he was. But Richard argued that he was the furthest thing from free. He got the advance for his book two years ago and hadn't even started writing yet. He felt as if he was drowning and pleaded with Calliope to help, to which she replied that he should ask her again when she was free. However, Richard refused to do so. Richard got a call from his agent, who informed him that the publishers had been calling and demanding the book, as it was already nine months overdue. Larry explained that he was already in breach of contract and he needed to offer the publishers something to calm their nerves before they cancel the deal and demand the advance back. Recalling what Erasmus said previously about Calliope not being human and taking what he needed from her, Richard went upstairs and forced her to give him inspiration, which in turn led to him writing his book. Meanwhile, Calliope prayed to The Fates to help her escape her imprisonment. They appeared before her, but unfortunately, they could not help. According to the Mysteries, she was lawfully bound. She wondered if anyone else could intercede on her behalf. Unfortunately, there were too few of the old powers who were willing or able to meddle in mortal affairs, as many had died. Only The Endless never faded; the Dream King and Calliope were close at one point, though they did not part on the best of terms, despite the fact that she did bear his child. However, Calliope didn't think Dream would ever forgive her or help her, nor did she want his help. Their hatred for one another was mutual. Although, Morpheus was in no position to help even if he could, as he too had been captured by mortals, leaving the waking realm plagued with sleepy sickness and rogue dreams and nightmares. Though apologetic, there was nothing The Fates could do to help. August 2020, two years later, Richard's second book was a hit, and now, every major studio was bidding for film and broadcasting rights. During the celebration, he had an exchange with a woman named Lottie, who admired his strong female lead character. Richard claimed that he was a feminist writer and that his female voice derived from the women in his life. August 2022, two more years later, Richard explained to Calliope that he would be shooting the film adaptation of his book in Los Angeles soon. With Richard distracted by a phone call with his agent, Calliope noticed an article in the newspaper that mentioned a woman who had awakened from the sleepy sickness, meaning that Morpheus had been freed. With Richard off in the other room, Calliope crept downstairs, where she attempted to summon Morpheus but was apprehended by Richard, who reminded her that she belonged to him and that not even Dream could save her. During an interview for his book, Richard discovered that Erasmus died a summer ago from killing himself. The last thing he did was write a letter to his publisher, begging them to bring one of his old books back into print. Dream received Calliope's message and decided to visit her. She was glad that he was free, though she could not say the same for herself, as she was bound by the laws. While only Richard could free her, Calliope was hoping that Morpheus could inspire him to let her go. For her imprisonment, Morpheus insisted that Richard not only let her go, but that he be punished. When Dream heard her call to him, it was a welcomed message, as the last time they crossed paths, she said she never wanted to see him again. The next day, Richard returned home to find Morpheus waiting for him. He requested that Richard set Calliope free. Frantic, Richard pleaded with Dream to allow him to keep her, even offering money, which had no sentimental value to Morpheus, who explained that Calliope had been held captive for more than 60 years and that he would not allow another moment to pass for her as a prisoner. If it's ideas that Richard sought, Dream offered them in abundance. Suddenly, it went dark and Richard awakened on the couch. Enraged and disoriented, Richard made his way to Calliope's room, where she explained that he was feeling the power of Morpheus, her ex-husband and that father of her son. Despite his recent encounter with Morpheus, Richard continued life as usual, attending a book reading, where he briefly saw Morpheus in the crowd, which left him in complete disarray and unable to fathom a single coherent story before fleeing the classroom. Nora and Sofia followed him into the stairwell, where he had written on the wall with his own blood. The ideas in his head were forming too quickly for him to make sense of them. Sofia wanted to get him to a hospital, but Richard instructed Nora to first go to his house and free Calliope. Nora went over to Richard's house and headed upstairs, where she unlocked Calliope's door, only to discover that her room was empty. After Nora exited the house, Calliope appeared, in disbelief that she was finally free, thanking Dream for his help. Now that she was free, Calliope wanted to ensure this never happened again by inspiring humanity to want better for themselves and rewriting the laws by which she was held, laws that were written long ago and that she and her sisters had no say in. Dream intended to do the same in his own realm. In their brief time together, Calliope noticed that Dream had changed. The old him would've left her to rot. She wondered if he still hated her for leaving him and blaming him for what happened, but he did not. He had learned much in recent time, and no matter what, he did not hate her. Now that she was free, Calliope hoped that Dream would now release Richard, as without forgiveness, wounds would never heal. And so, Dream freed Richard at her behest. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Richard was struggling to remember Morpheus' name. However, it wasn't just Dream's name he couldn't remember. Richard realized that with Calliope gone, so was his stories and future, though Nora had not the slightest idea who Richard was referring to. Neither did Richard for that matter, as he could no longer recall who Calliope was, only that she was gone. Calliope asked if she could visit Morpheus in the Dream Realm, so that they could finally talk about their son and grieve properly. One day perhaps, he responded, but Dream wasn't quite ready yet. Calliope thanked Dream one last time before exiting and heading back into the world, free once more.
