Oct 25, 2021 · One of the biggest differences between the book and the film is Jack’s fate. Whereas the novel allows for a tragic kind of redemption that grounds Jack in his deepest, most human longing to love and care for his family, the film leaves Jack—quite literally—cold.
- Hallorann’s Death. Dick Hallorann was played by iconic actor and musician Scatman Crothers in the 1980 film adaptation. Sharing the gift of shining along with the young boy Danny, Hallorann is the head cook at The Overlook hotel during its operating season and becomes a would-be savior to Danny and his mother in both the novel and the movie.
- Jack's Death. Frozen to death or blown up in a horrific explosion? For the character of Jack Torrance, he gets the best of both worlds. While in Kubrick's film, Jack finds himself trapped inside the daunting hedge maze during a snowstorm only to never escape and suffer a frozen death.
- The Grady Twins. Perhaps one of the most unsettling images to come out of the film is that of the Grady twins lurking in the hallways of The Overlook Hotel, inviting Danny to come play with them forever and ever.
- The Elevator. Another stunning visual from the Kubrick film is that of the hotel elevators cascading a sea of blood, representing the immense loss of life within the hotel, with symbolism being a staple of Kubrick's work.

- Room 237. In The Shining novel, the mysterious room where some supernatural events take place is room 217. In the film, it was changed to 237. This was due to a request from the Timberline Lodge, a hotel in Oregon that was used for the exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel.
- Ghosts vs Jack’s Mind. The Overlook Hotel is haunted, and that’s very clear in the book, with the topiaries in the garden even coming alive and attacking Dick Hallorann near the end of the story.

The Shining was published in 1977 as King’s third novel, and the second to be adapted for the screen.
