I know lots of people who speak their second language at a very good level, and yet hesitate to jump into learning a third language. Why is this?

  3. Third language acquisition refers to multilinguals learning additional languages. It contrasts with second language acquisition in the narrow sense, which is concerned with the acquisition of an additional language by (then) monolinguals.

    • Avoid starting more than one new language at once. If you’re a complete beginner in a new language, whether you’re already bilingual from childhood or not, you’ll hit a bit of a learning curve when starting again as an adult.
    • Focus on staying balanced and improving your time management. Languages take work. It takes hundreds to thousands of hours to learn a language to a high level, and after that you need to maintain the language if you expect to keep it active for long periods of time.
    • Learn languages from unrelated families. With related languages, you can “cheat” with cognates and grammar similarities. On the other hand, similar languages can be confused more easily than can those with more distant relations (or no relation whatsoever).
    • Use language immersion media. When picking up an unrelated language, media-based immersion is important, especially through listening. When I decide to dabble in a language that doesn’t bear many similarities to those I already know, the first thing I do is listen to tons of music and talk radio in the language.
