A member of the Democratic Party , he previously represented Maryland's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1939 until 1947.

D'Alesandro, Jr was a United States Representative and subsequently the Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, from 1947 to 1959.
