The incident was detailed in the book The Cokeville Miracle: When Angels Intervene by Hartt Wixom and his wife Judene, published by Cedar Fort, Inc., which formed the basis for a CBS made-for-TV movie titled To Save the Children.
The main protagonist of these true events, David Young, is a mixture of Charlie Manson and Sonny Wortzig, the bank robber in Sidney Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon. One of the most quoted lines of that movie is Wortzig's partner Sal's answer to his question in which country he would like to flee.
The strength of a community is tested when an unstable former police officer storms the local school and takes several children hostage.
