The earliest settlement of the area that would be incorporated in April 1836 as the Town of Tonawanda took place along Tonawanda Creek. In 1805 a handful of pioneers to Western New York began to clear a "slash" in the dark forest that covered this region, thereby commencing the agricultural development of the area, which was complete by the time of the Civil War.
