Trichomoniasis is a common infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, a flagellate protozoan that lives in the female lower genital tract and the male urethra and prostate. The parasite is transmitted by sexual intercourse and can cause vaginitis, urethritis, epididymitis and prostatitis. Oct 16, 2023 · In females, trichomoniasis is a common cause of vaginal discharge and is associated with poor birth outcomes and increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease. In males, trichomoniasis is often asymptomatic and associated with increased risk of epididymitis, prostatitis and decreased sperm motility.
In women, trichomoniasis signs and symptoms include: A large amount of a thin, often foul-smelling discharge from the vagina — which might be clear, white, gray, yellow or green; Genital redness, burning and itching; Pain with urination or sex; Discomfort over the lower stomach area; In men, trichomoniasis rarely causes symptoms.
