Annie Brennan, known in Secoma as one of the best skippers in the Pacific Northwest, finds her boat Narcissus frequently outmaneuvred by rival Red Severn. Her son Alec adores his mother and wants to quit school to take care of her, convinced that his alcoholic father Terry can't.
Secoma, Washington based tugboat, the Narcissus, is owned and captained by Annie Brennan. Among her crew are her drunkard but good natured husband, Terry, and her conscientious son, Alec. Annie continually loses business because of Terry's mistakes.
