Key events of the 20th century. The 20th century changed the world in unprecedented ways. The World Wars sparked tension between countries and led to the creation of atomic bombs, the Cold War led to the Space Race and the creation of space-based rockets, and the World Wide Web was created.

Overview. The early 20th century was an era of business expansion and progressive reform in the United States. The progressives, as they called themselves, worked to make American society a better and safer place in which to live. They tried to make big business more responsible through regulations of various kinds.
The standalone "turn of the century" phrase is generally understood to mean the change (whether upcoming or past) closest to the current generation. During the 20th century, the phrase was used to refer to the transition from the 19th century to the 20th century.
