Oct 24, 2023 · Updated on October 24, 2023. Cocktails! | Photo by Meredith. When looking at a bar menu, the cocktail list can seem endless, but you can never go wrong with a classic. Every year, Drinks International announces its top 50 list of the world's bestselling classic cocktails.
- Manhattan. No one knows for certain who created this cocktail or where. Despite its mysterious history, it likely came into being sometime around the 1880s as a combination of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters.
- Negroni. One cocktail above all others reveals you as a savvy drinker, according to the legendary Gary Regan, who famously said that whether you’re trying to impress a first date or your boss, ordering a Negroni will do it.
- Martini. The Martini is known for its allure and sophistication, but its origins are muddled at best. The formula appeared in print under several different names around the turn of the 20th century.
- Daiquiri. The blender has certainly put its stamp on the Daiquiri, but this profoundly simple drink is at its best when it stays clear of a steel blade.
- Dry Martini. The martini is often the first cocktail many people think of when it comes to "fancy" drinks. While many up drinks are referred to as "martinis", there is only one original martini.
- Manhattan. What the martini is to gin, the Manhattan is to whiskey. You'll switch from dry to sweet vermouth in this drink, though whiskey is a complicated category of spirits, and each one you pour will create a slightly different drink.
- Old-Fashioned. The old-fashioned is another straightforward cocktail and a great way to explore different whiskies. It will also introduce you to the bartending technique of muddling and is more about the process than the ingredients.
- Daiquiri. Though there are countless variations available today, the classic daiquiri remains a favorite, and it's an excellent drink for any occasion. Its original form requires just three ingredients and is one of the best ways to test a new rum.
- Ancestrals. "These are among the original, early 19th century-style cocktails" These are among the original, early 19th century-style cocktails, listed in vintage bar guides as simply "Whiskey Cocktail" or "Improved Gin Cocktail" and the like.
- Sours. "citrus juice in a starring role." As the name implies, these drinks feature citrus juice in a starring role. The juice is usually lemon or lime, sometimes grapefruit, and we'll include orange juice by citric default, even though orange juice usually carries little of a sour bite.
- Spirit-Forward Cocktails. One of the great innovations in mixology took place around the 1880s, when vermouth and other fortified wines were mixed into the Ancestrals to subdue the alcohol's bite and to add complexity of flavor.
- Duos and Trios. I'm stealing Gary Regan's name for this category from his The Joy of Mixology, because it's so apt. Duos are drinks composed of a base spirit with a modifier of a liqueur (and sometimes a dash of bitters); depending on the recipe, they can be sweeter than the Spirit-Forward Cocktails, but just as powerful (if not more so).
