- Standard cut. Standard cuts are the most basic and common form of transition in video editing. The standard cut simply moves the footage from one shot to another, seamlessly moving the video and narrative along without any special effects.
- Jump cut. Jump cuts edit two sequential shots of the same subject in quick succession with minimal change in the subject or camera's position.
- L-Cut & J-Cut. L-Cuts and J-Cuts are part of a similar editing technique which involves playing the audio from the current scene over the beginning of the next scene (L-Cut), or the audio from the next scene playing before the video footage transitions over (J-Cut).
- Cross-cut (or parallel edits) Cross-cutting, also known as parallel editing, is a technique where two or more scenes in different locations are edited together so that the viewer knows they are happening at the same time.
