On June 1, 2016, two men were killed in a murder-suicide at a School of Engineering building on the campus of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The gunman was identified as Mainak Sarkar, an Indian-born 38-year-old former UCLA Ph.D student.
UCLA offers 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a wide range of disciplines, enrolling about 31,500 undergraduate and 12,800 graduate students. UCLA had 119,000 applicants for Fall 2016, including transfer applicants, making the school the most applied-to of any American university.
The Senate, however, voted to request that the controversial oath be "deleted or revised." By August 1950, 36 faculty of Senate rank and 62 non-Senate UC employees were dismissed for refusing to sign the loyalty oath, including three from UCLA: John Caughey, History; Charles L. Mowat, History; and David S. Saxon, Physics.
The organization of the Senate and its relationship to the university president and the governing board, however, was the prerogative of the Regents. Codified by the UC Regents in 1920, the Academic Senate is the vehicle through which faculty share in the operation and management of the university.
As of the fall of 2016, Cal State LA switched over from the quarter to the semester system. Tuition and fees for in-state is $6,745, $17,245 for out-of-state and room and board $11,723 as of the 2018-19 academic year with a student/faculty ratio of 25:1.
