A grandson of Ulrich V, count of Württemberg, he succeeded his kinsman Eberhard II as duke of Württemberg in 1498, being declared of age in 1503.

1. In 1436, Count Louis I (+1450) and his brother Ulrich V agreed on the partition of Württemberg. This was first limited on four years, but was made permanent by the Treaty of Nürtingen, signed in Jan 1442. Louis I received the part of Urach, Ulrich received the part of Stuttgart.
