Umeå är centralort i Umeå kommun, residensstad i Västerbottens län och sedan 1965 universitetsstad – Umeå universitet är med cirka 16 000 helårsstudieplatser landets femte största.
The Umeå Institute of Technology or Tekniska högskolan i Umeå is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University. The Institute offers a wide range of study programmes, some of them not to be found in any other part of Sweden. Research in engineering is gradually being expanded.
History. It was founded as a lasarett in 1784, known as the Yellow House ( Gula huset ), on Storgatan 28 in Umeå. It had eight beds. The building still remains but is no longer used by the hospital. [3] As Umeå expanded a new hospital was built on Ålidbacken in central Umeå. It was started in 1907 (celebrating its centennial in 2007).
