Since California became a U.S. state in 1850, it has sent congressional delegations to the United States Senate and United States House of Representatives.Each state elects two senators to serve for six years, and members of the House to two-year terms.
The 2012 elections were the first to be based on the congressional districts which were defined based on the 2010 United States Census.  Each state is in charge of the redistricting of districts within their state, and several states have one "at-large" division.
