The Ethnographic Collection of the Georg-August-University Göttingen is one of the most important teaching and research collections in the German-speaking world. Its beginnings date back to the time of the Enlightenment. In 1773, the Royal Academic Museum was found at the University, whose holdings soon included the first ethnographic objects.
On account of this 250 year-old tradition, the investigation of antiquity in Europe, the Near East and Middle East is very well represented at Göttingen in the various institutes and departments.
