Apr 9, 2024 · Nowhere have "weird" sports been given more of a stage to shine than at the Olympics, where organizers have taken their chances on unusual, lesser-known sports since the first Olympic Games in 1896. Some of those sports have worked out really well. Others, not so much. These are the weirdest Olympic sports of all time.

    • Trampoline. Although it looks like fun, trampolining could very well be the most dangerous Olympic sport. Trampolinists perform at least 10 different acrobatic maneuvers, with five judges scoring their efforts.
    • Dressage. Not counting a 12-year hiatus, dressage has been a mainstay in the Summer Olympics since 1900. Today, horses are specifically bred for this high-stepping sport.
    • Eventing. Call it the triathlon of horse and rider. Eventing has been a part of the Olympics since 1912. The competitors are judged across three disciplines: dressage, cross country and show jumping.
    • Rhythmic gymnastics. Some might know rhythmic gymnastics for its ribbon dancing, but it's so much more than that. Gymnasts are can use ribbons, balls, and, perhaps most interestingly, a hoop.

Interestingly, Tug-of-War was one of the original games from the early Olympics that took place in 500 B.C.E. However, it is only documented as being part of five Olympics between 1900 and 1920.

    • Tug-of-War. Tug-of-war featured in the Olympics from 1900 to 1920. Countries could enter multiple “clubs” (teams), and could therefore win more than one medal in the same event.
    • Club Swinging. Men's club swinging was a gymnastics event at the 1904 and 1932 Olympics. Competitors wielded an Indian club in each hand. They spun the clubs, which resembled long bowling pins, around their heads and bodies in a series of intricate movements.
    • Solo Synchronized Swimming. Synchronized swimming is usually thought of as a team sport, as the swimmers sync their movements not just with the music, but with each other.
    • Rope Climbing. Men's rope climbing was one of eight gymnastics events at the 1896 Olympics in Athens—modern history’s first international Olympic Games.
