The Uzbek language has been written in various scripts: Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic. [1] . The language traditionally used Arabic script, but the official Uzbek government under the Soviet Union started to use Cyrillic in 1940, which is when widespread literacy campaigns were initiated by the Soviet government across the Union.
Uzbek belongs to the Turkic group of languages, which includes languages such as Kazakh, Turkish, Uyghur, and Tatar. Turkic languages have been spoken across vast territory from the Balkans to China for many centuries. Within the Turkic group, Uzbek and Uyghur form the Qarluq sub-branch.
Uzbek is the official state language of the country and is used by the government and citizens on a daily basis. There are about 25 million speakers of Uzbek in and outside of Uzbekistan ( Azimova, 2010 ).
