I saw Abre Los Ojos (the original Spanish version) about a week before Vanilla Sky, and that completely ruined the American version for me. It was practically a shot-for-shot remake (all the best parts are in both, all the worst parts are only in Vanilla Sky). Penelope Cruz even plays the same role. It was the laziest adaptation I've ever seen.

Open comment sort options. No. Vanilla Sky is a remake of Abre Los Ojos (1997). Thats the thing, Abre Los Ojos might be the inspiration to start the thing.. Vanilla is much better though. Eyes Wide Shut is based on a book written in 1926 and it began filming in 1996, before Abre Los Ojos came out.
