Jul 22, 2023 · Vasili Ivanovich Shemyachich was a grandson of the famous knyaz of Galich, Dmitry Yurievich Shemyaka. His father, Ivan Dmitrievich, was forced to flee to Lithuania in 1454; the Polish king Casimir IV Jagiellon bestowed him the duchy of Novgorod-Seversky.

Vasilii Ivanovich managed to stay out of trouble during the struggle for power between Ivan Petrovich Shuiskii and Boris Gudunov. When the Shuiskiis fomented a riot in Moscow in 1586, Ivan Petrovich and his son Andrei Ivanovich were banished and confined until they died in 1588 and 1589 respectively.
