According to the biography of her "Vera-Ellen the Magic and Mystery her apparent weight loss in "White Christmas was due to her grueling rehearsal that at times even made her feet bleed. Vera-Ellen like Fred Astaire were perfectionists when it came to their art of dancing.

Although Vera-Ellen could act as well as dance, MGM didn't take her talents seriously enough to give her many non-dancing parts. She made appearances on TV and in Las Vegas for a few years before finally retiring. One side effect of anorexia is rapid aging.
