During such a dark time it is important and uplifting to learn about individuals who are brave and willing to risk their lives to help others.
Soon after, Gentile protectors Kugler and Johannes Kleiman, together with Otto Frank, Edith Frank-Holländer, Margot Frank, Anne Frank, Hermann van Pels, Auguste van Pels, Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer, were arrested and taken to Gestapo headquarters in Amsterdam.(below is the red cross card of Johannes Kleiman after his arrest)
Aug 08, 2020 · The whole group were arrested; as well, so were their helpers Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler. Just a month later on September 3, 1944, the Frank family was deported to Auschwitz.

Jan 11, 2010 · Two of the helpers, Victor Kugler and Johannes Kleiman, were sent to labor camps, but survived the war. Around 140,000 Jews lived in the Netherlands before the 1940-45 Nazi occupation.
The police took Kugler and Kleiman to a prison in Amsterdam. On 11 September 1944 they were sent to a concentration camp in Amersfoot, also in Holland. Because Kleiman was ill, he was allowed to go free on 18 September. He lived in Amsterdam until he died in 1959. Kugler later escaped, and he went to live in Canada, where he died in 1989.
