Walter D. Smith, Director of the Migrant Program fur Holmes County Schools and a longtime resident of Lexington, died suddenly at his home in Lexington on Saturday. November 20. He and his wife also own and operate the Lexington Advertiser and Durant News.
Smith successfully overturned the conviction on appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Her newspapers remained popular, and their profits enabled her to live well and travel abroad. In March 1950 she married Walter Dyer Smith, a Pennsylvania ship’s purser she had met on a cruise.

In 1956, Smith acquired the Banner County Outlook (Flora, Mississippi) and the Northside Reporter (Jackson, Mississippi), the latter based in the state capital. In 1950, she married Walter Dyer Smith, known as "Smitty", whom she had met on an around-the-world cruise. He was working as the ship's purser.
Two years after Roland Povall sold the Lexington Advertiser in 1941, Hazel Brannon, who later married Walter Dyer Smith, purchased it. In 1964, Brannon Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for her editorials supporting the Civil Rights Movement.
