In 1966, after a decade of exploring alternative vehicles for philanthropy, Bill Hewlett, at the age of 53, formed the foundation. The founding board members were Bill, Flora, and their eldest son Walter, a 22-year-old Harvard graduate who planned to pursue further studies at Stanford University.
