Oct 6, 2023 · 1. Fredericksburg is a lovely German town in Central Texas, just about an hour and a half outside Austin and San Antonio. The town was founded on May 8, 1846, by German immigrants in Texas. The settlement was first called Friedrichsburg to honor Prince Frederick of Prussia but later was changed to the current name.
Lutherans from congregations in Lusatia, Prussia, and Saxony left for Texas under the leadership and pastoral care of John Kilian. They arrived in Galveston in December 1854 on the English sailing vessel, the Ben Nevis, having travelled via Hamburg, Hull and Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland.

German immigration to newly formed Republic of Texas began in the early 19th century, with the first wave of settlers arriving in the 1830s.

- New Braunfels. Just 30 miles north of San Antonio, this small town was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. Most Texans know New Braunfels for their German festivals.

Connecting other German towns in Texas, settlers created FM 1863, a roadway between Bulverde, New Braunfels, Boerne, and Fredericksburg.
