Cardinal priest of St. Mark’s Basilica, Rome, he succeeded Valentine as pope and is chiefly remembered for his mediation in the Carolingian dynastic struggle between Lothar I, the co-emperor, and the emperor Louis the Pious, when his father Louis granted.
