The National Museum houses nearly 14 million items from the areas of natural history, history, arts, music and librarianship, which are located in dozens of museum buildings. The City of Prague aldermen’s committee approved the rules of the permanent committee of the Municipal Museum of Prague on 3 October 1881. In the spring of 1883, the museum opened its collections to the public in a small pavilion near the demolished Poříčí Gate.
In 1992 the historical core of the city covering 866 hectares was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. Prague was one of the nine cities awarded by the European Community the title of European City of Culture for the year 2000.
