Rob Zombie is not a filmmaker known for his subtlety. The four live-action features he has made thus far – House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and two Halloween flicks – have been filled with death and destruction. Murder and mayhem. And graphic violence designed to both shock and repulse.

Which makes the first hour of his latest film so surprising, as although The Lords of Salem is another horror effort, it’s much more of an understated slow-burn. Zombie endeavours to build suspense and tension before finally unleashing a truly bizarre hell on his characters, and while it’s a far from successful exercise in terror, you’ve got to respect the man for making a film this downright strange. The movie kicks off in Salem Massachusetts, 1696, with a group of witches dancing and cackling around a fire before first desecrating their bodies and then denying Jesus Christ, like some period Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Cut to Salem’s present day and we’re introduced to Heidi Hawthorne, a rock chick and DJ who – together with two guys called Herman – forms the ‘Big H Radio Team.’

In somewhat slow and painstaking fashion we are then exposed to the monotony of Heidi’s daily routine – from walking her dog to attending AA meetings – proceedings only enlivened by her constant state of semi-undress. But everything changes when Heidi receives a mysterious wooden box containing a record simply labelled ‘a gift from the gods.’

A bizarre and intermittently entertaining mess of a movie that promises more than it delivers.
