West Germanic languages, group of Germanic languages that developed in the region of the North Sea, Rhine-Weser, and Elbe. Out of the many local West Germanic dialects the following six modern standard languages have arisen: English, Frisian, Dutch ( Netherlandic -Flemish), Afrikaans, German, and Yiddish.
Voralthochdeutsche Sprache. Als voralthochdeutsche Sprache bezeichnet man jene Sprachstufe des Deutschen, wie sie etwa zwischen dem 5. und 8. Jahrhundert verwendet wurde. Ihre Vorläufersprache wird allgemein noch als ur- bzw. gemeingermanisch oder westgermanisch bezeichnet. Um 750 wurde diese Sprachform durch die althochdeutsche Sprache abgelöst.
