LTA has developed a new system to assemble the carbon fiber tube and titanium framework called the "roller coaster," which allows workers to remain on the ground instead of scaling the fragile structure.

Mar 8, 2021 · The airdock was built in 1929 and used by Goodyear to build blimps and rigid airships that included the USS Akron and USS Macon. Goodyear now builds its semi-rigid airships at its Wingfoot Lake blimp base in nearby Suffield Township in Portage County.

Mar 7, 2021 · Construction was still underway when the airdock welcomed two gigantic visitors on the same day. The USS Los Angeles, a rigid airship 658 feet long, 104 feet high and 90 feet in diameter, soared over Akron at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 28, 1929, on the way to the National Air Races in Cleveland. It was a warmup act for the headliner.
Two dirigibles, the Akron (ZRS-4) and its sister, the Macon (ZRS-5), were built in the Airdock and launched in 1931 and 1934 respectively. The building later housed the photographic division of the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation.
