     One can share a variable between files in (at least) four ways. You already mentioned two of them:

     • using extern: it will be a global variable, anyone will be able to modify it, not thread-safe; the use of global variables should be minimized;
     • passing a pointer to the the variable: it will provide read / write access to the variable;
     • passing the value of the variable: provides read-only access to the variable;
     • using an access function.

     The function can be as simple as:

     float read_speed(){ return speed;}-

     If the variable needs to be modified also, another function can be provided:

     void write_speed(float new_speed){ speed = new_speed;}-

     The advantage of using access functions is that it separates the variable from the other files. If needed, you can provide several functions for the same variable, for different needs.

     The cost is that code will increase a little and speed will decrease lightly.

     Compare:

     float read_speed_mph(); // get speed in miles per hourfloat read_speed_mps(); // get speed in meters per second-

     They both return the same speed, expressed in different units. The body of the functions will make the right calculation to provide the correct value, while the variable will remain unmodified.

     These terms are used to define what kind of operation the function performs on the passed variables. Read, Write or Read/Write. This notation is used in the documentation of libraries to ensure the caller provides appropriate variable type to the function for performing appropriately and not accidentally hinder the output or operation.

     IN, OUT and IN/OUT are not C++ keywords, This mode is used in the documentation for just an indication what type of parameter is ideal to pass.

     IN (Incoming Parameters) :

     Means that the interface will only read the value. If the parameter is passed by value, it is okay not passing variable as const as the function will have a local variable to perform operations. To avoid copying, passing by reference is preferred, therefore it is recommended to use const to prevent any changes.

     OUT (Outgoing Parameters) :

     When the parameter is marked as out, it means that the function does not require to read the value, parameter value is of no importance. In fact the parameters marked are needed to output multiple values. Such parameters are needed to be pointers, references and structures.

     IN/OUT

     When the parameter mode is IN/OUT, it signals that the function requires the value passed in the parameter, read the value, then later modify it. Function requires both input and output values.

     "identifier" is an element of the language grammar. After preprocessing, all tokens are one of the following: keyword, identifier, constant, string-literal or punctuator.

     If a token starts with a letter (or underscore) it can only be a keyword or an identifier. If it's not in the table of keywords then it is an identifier. For more technical detail on this , see Annex A of the C Standard.

     In your program x and main are identifiers, int, if and extern are keywords, 1 is a constant, and everything else is a punctuator.

     Identifiers are used as names of entities. The same identifier can be used in different scopes to designate different entities (or the same entity). Linkage is the name of the process by which identifiers are associated with entities.

     Sometimes the standard uses the word "identifier" to mean the entity identified by an identifier, this is covered in 6.2.1/5:

     Unless explicitly stated otherwise, where this International Standard uses the term “identifier” to refer to some entity (as opposed to the syntactic construct), it refers to the entity in the relevant name space whose declaration is visible at the point the identifier occurs.

     The first code is erroneous because of 6.7/3:

     If an identifier has no linkage, there shall be no more than one declaration of the identifier (in a declarator or type specifier) with the same scope and in the same name space, except that: [...]

     The int x; has no linkage so there shall not be another definition of x in the same scope. (The list of exceptions does not have anything relevant to this case).

     In the second code, 6.7/3 is not violated because the second declaration is not in the same scope as the first one. The text you quoted explains that extern int x; names a different entity than int x; did, which is fine.

     The second program has undefined behaviour (no diagnostic required) due to declaring an identifier with external linkage but not providing a definition. You may or may not see an error message.
