     The question is generally not about the amount of bandwith it might save. It is more about lowering the number of HTTP requests needed to render a webpage.

     Considering :

     • web browsers only do a few HTTP requests in parallel
     • doing an HTTP request means a round-trip to the server, which takes lots of time
     • we have "fast" internet connection, which means we download fast...

     What takes time, when doing lots of requests to get small contents (like images, icons, and the like) is the multiple round-trips to the server : you end up spending time waiting for the request to go, and the server to respond, instead of using this time to download data.

     If we can minimize the number of requests, we minimize the number of trips to the server, and use our hight-speed connection better (we download a bigger file, instead of waiting for many smaller ones).

     That's why CSS sprites are used.

     In C++/CLI you can define functions outside of classes, you can't do that in C#. But I don't know if that is an advantage

     I would think that the single biggest advantage is the managed/unmanaged interop. Writing pure managed C++/CLI would (to me at least) without interoping with C# or other .Net languages seems like missing the point entirely. Yeah you could do this, but why would you.

     If you're going to write pure managed code why not use C#. Especially (like nobugs said) if VS2010 drops IntelliSense support for C++/CLI. Also in VS2008 the IntelliSense for C++/CLI isn't as good the C# IntelliSense; so from a developer standpoint, it's easier to work/explore/refactor in C# than C++/CLI.

     If you want some of the C++ benefits you list like the preprocessor, stack semantics and templates, then why not use C++?

     Odd, I like C++/CLI but you listed exactly its features I dislike. My criticisms:

     • Okay. But accidental use of the hat is pretty widespread, getting the value of the value type boxed without warning. There is no way to diagnose this mistake.
     • Power that comes at a high price, templates you write are not usable in any other .NET language. If anything, it worsens the C++ template export problem. The complete failure of STL/CLR is worth pondering too.
     • Erm, no.
     • This was IMO a serious mistake. It already is difficult to avoid problems with accidental boxing, as outlined in the first bullet. Stack semantics makes it seriously difficult for any starting programmer to sort this out. This was a design decision to placate C++ programmers, that's okay, but the using statement was a better solution.
     • Not sure how it is easier. The GC.SuppressFinalize() call is automatic, that's all. It is very rare for anybody to write a finalizer, but you can't avoid the auto-generated code from making the call. That's inefficient and a violation of the 'you don't pay for what you don't use' principle. Add to this that writing the destructor also forces a default finalizer to be auto-generated. One you'd never use and wouldn't want to be used if you forgot or omitted to use the destructor.

     Well, that's all very subjective perhaps. The death-knell will come with VS2010, it will ship without IntelliSense support for C++/CLI.

     Using autoencoders may in some cases improve performance, yield biologically plausible filters, and more importantly, give you a model based on your data instead of predefined filters. Autoencoders will give you filters that may fit your data better, in general. The only downside is of course the additional computation time. However, in many cases it doesn't hinder you from learning online.

     Forms are often broken up into various sets of fields.

     The fieldset tag allows you to logically group sets of fields in order that your forms be more descriptive.

     You'll also note that you can use the fieldset to style your forms and display those logical associations between fields.

     Just like forms you find in the "real" world.

     The "advantages" of using a fieldset are that they allow you to mark up your data (in this case a form) in the most semantic way available. Consider that placing your fields in a fieldset is more descriptive than placing your fields in a div. The div tells you nothing about the relationship between the fields, a fieldset tells you there is a relationship.

     It's a similar principle to many of the new HTML5 tagsets. <footer> for example tells you more about the meaning of the data inside it compared to an ambiguous <div>.

     Boost is used so extensively because:

     • It is open-source and peer-reviewed.
     • It provides a wide range of platform agnostic functionality that STL missed.
     • It is a complement to STL rather than a replacement.
     • Many of Boost developers are on the C++ standard committee. In fact, many parts of Boost is considered to be included in the next C++ standard library.
     • It is documented nicely.
     • Its license allows inclusion in open-source and closed-source projects.
     • Its features are not usually dependent on each other so you can link only the parts you require. [Luc Hermitte's comment]
