     Alternatives are:

     • Turn off multi-process Firefox. (Though that's only a temporary solution and doesn't bring back all functionality of Firebug. E.g. the Script panel is broken in current versions of Firefox.)
     • Install an old version of Firefox where Firebug still works and disable updates. (Also only a temporary solution, because you'll miss (security) bug fixes and new features.)
     • Wait until the gaps between Firebug and the Firefox DevTools are fixed. (Or even help them fixing them.)
     • Switch to another browser and use its developer tools.
     • Rework Firebug to make it compatible with multi-process Firefox (which is the main reason for the integration into the DevTools). Update: Starting with Firefox 57 only WebExtensions will be supported, meaning extensions work cross-browser and are more secure, but they also have limited APIs. So, a reworked Firebug would not have all the features the original Firebug had.

     Replacing the Grid is usually not fun...

     You could try:

     • Telerik
     • DevExpress
     • Infragistics
     • SyncFusion
     • ComponentArt
     • ObjectListView (nuget)

     But first - evaluate your needs, see why the GridView is not giving you the desired results & then do a through technical analysis on these commercial products before making any changes to your code.

     Also as a side-note: don't directly use the vendor code & namespaces into your code, perhaps DI would be a better mechanism to abstract via a IGridView interface...

     You are mistaken. You should override equals as seldom as possible.

     All this info comes from Effective Java, Second Edition (Josh Bloch). The first edition chapter on this is still available as a free download.

     From Effective Java:

     The easiest way to avoid problems is not to override the equals method, in which case each instance of the class is equal only to itself.

     The problem with arbitrarily overriding equals/hashCode is inheritance. Some equals implementations advocate testing it like this:

     if (this.getClass() != other.getClass()) { return false; //inequal}-

     In fact, the Eclipse (3.4) Java editor does just this when you generate the method using the source tools. According to Bloch, this is a mistake as it violates the Liskov substitution principle.

     From Effective Java:

     There is no way to extend an instantiable class and add a value component while preserving the equals contract.

     Two ways to minimize equality problems are described in the Classes and Interfaces chapter:

     • Favour composition over inheritance
     • Design and document for inheritance or else prohibit it

     As far as I can see, the only alternative is to test equality in a form external to the class, and how that would be performed would depend on the design of the type and the context you were trying to use it in.

     For example, you might define an interface that documents how it was to be compared. In the code below, Service instances might be replaced at runtime with a newer version of the same class - in which case, having different ClassLoaders, equals comparisons would always return false, so overriding equals/hashCode would be redundant.

     The obvious example is to test if two Strings are the same (or two Files, or URIs). For example, what if you wanted to build up a set of files to parse. By definition, the set contains only unique elements. Java's Set type relies on the equals/hashCode methods to enforce uniqueness of its elements.

     I don't think it's true that equals should always be overridden. The rule as I understand it is that overriding equals is only meaningful in cases where you're clear on how to define semantically equivalent objects. In that case, you override hashCode() as well so that you don't have objects that you've defined as equivalent returning different hashcodes.

     If you can't define meaningful equivalence, I don't see the benefit.

     Use commas (or tabs), but use a proper serializer that knows how to escape characters on write, and unescape them on read. The csv

     module knows how to do this and seems to match your likely requirements.

     Yes, you could try to find some random character that never appears in your data, but that just means you'll die horribly if that character ever does appear, and it means producing output that no existing parser knows how to handle. CSV is a well-known format (if surprisingly complex, with varied dialects), and can likely be parsed by existing libraries in whatever language needs to consume it.

     JSON (handled in Python by the json module) is often useful as well as a language-agnostic format, as is pickle (though it's only readable in Python), but from what you described, CSV is probably the go to solution to start with.

     It appears that the web page that you are working with is not playing nice with window.postMessage. This is understandable, as such a web page would normally be expecting to be the only thing using it in the page.

     You have four alternatives:

     • Install your message event listener on the window before the web page scritps install any listeners so that you receive the event first. This will most likely be done by injecting at document_start and installing your listener prior to the scripts for the page being loaded. In addition to your call to .addEventListener() being prior to any script on the page acting (i.e. injecting at document_start), you should indicate that your listener will useCapture. This will cause your listener to be called prior to any listener added by page scripts. You will need to uniquely identify in the message content that messages are to/from your extension code. You will need to cancel the event ( .stopImmediatePropagation() and .stopPropagation()) for those messages which are yours, and allow the event to propagate for those that are not.
     • Use a custom event just for your extension.
     • Directly manipulate variables/functions and/or call functions in the page context by inserting additional <script> elements.
     • Dynamically change the code of the web page's scripts so they play nice. This will only work on a single page/domain and could easily break if the web page changes its code. While possible, this is not a good option.
