     Someone actually asked a question here fairly recently that I answered with the Zip extension method, so it's obviously important for some people. ;)

     Actually, it is a fairly important operation for mathematical algorithms - matrices, curve fitting, interpolation, pattern recognition, that sort of thing. Also very important in engineering applications like digital signal processing where much of what you do is combine multiple signals or apply linear transforms to them - both are based on the sample index, hence, zip it. Zipping two sequences is far, far faster than sorting and joining them based on some key, especially when you know in advance that the sequences have the same number of elements and are in the same order.

     I can't get into tight specifics here on account of my current employment, but speaking generally, this is also valuable for telemetry data - industrial, scientific, that sort of thing. Often you'll have time sequences of data coming from hundreds or thousands of points - parallel sources - and you need to aggregate, but horizontally, over devices, not over time. At the end, you want another time sequence, but with the sum or average or some other aggregate of all the individual points.

     It may sound like a simple sort/group/join in SQL Server (for example) but it's actually really hard to do efficiently this way. For one thing, the timestamps may not match exactly, but you don't care about differences of a few milliseconds, so you end up having to generate a surrogate key/row number and group on that - and of course, the surrogate row number is nothing more than the time index which you already had. Zipping is simple, fast, and infinitely parallelizable.

     I don't know if I'd call it foundational, but it it is important. I don't use the Reverse method very often either, but by the same token I'm glad I don't have to keep writing it myself on those rare occasions when I do find a need for it.

     One of the reasons it might not seem that useful to you now is that .NET/C# 3.5 does not have tuples. C# 4 does have tuples, and when you're working with tuples, zipping really is a fundamental operation because ordering is strictly enforced.

     zip is useful if you'd like to iterate over multiple iterables simultaneously, which is a reasonably common scenario in Python.

     One real-world scenario where zip has come in handy for me is if you have an M by N array, and you want to look at columns instead of rows. For example:

     >>> five_by_two = ((0, 1), (1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 4), (4, 5))>>> two_by_five = tuple(zip(*five_by_two))>>> two_by_five((0, 1, 2, 3, 4), (1, 2, 3, 4, 5))

     Simple script

     Basically the code in a Python module just runs. For a really simple program you could create a Python file hi.py with the following contents:

     print('Hi ' + raw_input('What is your name?\n'))-

     This can be run using:

     $ python hi.pyWhat is your name?RemcoHi Remco

     Making it executable

     In systems which support this you could add a shebang and make the file executable. The hi.py now looks like this:

     #!/usr/bin/env pythonprint('Hi ' + raw_input('What is your name?\n'))-

     Then from a terminal run

     $ chmod +x hi.py$ ./hi.pyWhat is your name?RemcoHi Remco

     You may want to split the logic, so it can be used in other modules as well. In that case you don't want to run all code in the module. The main module which was run is named __main__. This is typically what you use for a simple script.

     hi.py:

     #!/usr/bin/env pythondef get_name(): return raw_input('What is your name?\n')if __name__ == '__main__': print('Hi ' + get_name())

     bye.py:

     entry points

     The project is now getting serious. It should be properly packaged so it can be distributed and installed by others. For this a setup.py must be created. The project now has the following filestructure:

     |- bye.py|- hi.py`- setup.py

     entry points are functions, so we will need to put the main functionality in functions. Let's name both functions main.

     hi.py:

     bye.py:

     setup.py:

     I will not go into details about python packaging. The point is that the entry points refer to the main functions of the hi and bye modules. Similarly 'gui_scripts' can be specified.

     The next steps following should be used from within a virtualenv.

     The package can now be installed by running:

     $ python setup.py install-

     You can now simply access the main function from the command line:

     $ hiWhat is your name?RemcoHi Remco

     This is typically what you use when creating a package you want to distribute.

     Another way is to specify scripts in setup.py. This allows to run the Python scripts as regular scripts like in the beginning. To implement this, just run the main function from within that file and specify it as a script in setup.py.

     hi.py:

     #!/usr/bin/env pythondef get_name(): return raw_input('What is your name?\n')def main(): print('Hi ' + get_name())if __name__ == '__main__': main()

     bye.py: #!/usr/bin/env python import hi

     Reinstall the package. There are now 3 ways to run hi and bye:

     By directly calling the file:

     $ python hi.py-

     From anywhere using the entry point:

     $ hi-

     From anywhere using the setuptools scripts:

     $ hi.py-

     Note that scripts may also refer to non-python scripts.

     Don't know where you got the following code from

     data_bytes = str.encode(request_params)key_bytes = str.encode(dev_key)iv_bytes = str.encode(dev_iv)-

     but you should know that it is equivalent to the following:

     data_bytes = request_params.encode("ascii")key_bytes = dev_key.encode("ascii")iv_bytes = dev_iv.encode("ascii")-

     which means that non-ASCII characters in any of the three variables will cause an error (I hope you don't make up an AES key of ASCII characters only?).

     In Python 2.x, str objects (byte[] in C#) are bytes and unicode objects (string in C#) are for text. This confusing fact was changed in Python 3.x, by the way. That means if request_params is a Unicode object, you should encode it as UTF-8, and if it's a str object, you should assume (or check) that it is already encoded as UTF-8. So it might be something like:

     if isinstance(request_params, unicode): data_bytes = request_params.encode("utf-8")else: request_params.decode("utf-8") # optional check whether it is correct UTF-8 data_bytes = request_params

     As for key/IV, they will always be binary data (e.g. 16 bytes for AES-128), not text. So they don't have a character encoding. Remove those two lines of code and probably replace them with

     assert len(dev_key) == block_size and len(dev_iv) == block_size-
