     The basic rule is: A project results in a single output file [1].

     If you want to package building blocks into static libraries, create a project for each one.

     Unit test are separate from the code, so it's common to see a "foo" and a "foo test" project side by side.

     With respect to your small building blocks, I use this guideline: If it is closely enough related to be put in the same folder, it is closely enough related to be put in the same project.

     And managing a ton of small projects is incredibly frustrating. They each have a million settings and definitions (under multiple configurations and platforms...) that are a real pain to transfer from one project to the other.

     Property pages are intended to solve this problem. Just define a property page containing related settings and definitions, and it becomes as easy as adding the property page to a new project.

     As each project can pull its settings from multiple property pages, you can group them into logical groups. As an example: a "unit test" property page with all settings related to your unit test framework.

     To create property page in Visual Studio 2015: in the View menu, there is an option "Property Manager". You get a different tree view of your solution, with the projects, then the configurations, and then all the property pages for that project+configuration combination. The context menu for the configuration has an option to create a new property page or to add an existing one.

     [1] Although it is common to have the Release configuration result in foo.dll and Debug configuration in food.dll, so they can exist next to each other without resorting to the Debug/ and Release/ folders. In the General properties, set the TargetName to "$(ProjectName)d" (for Debug configuration) and remove the "$(Configuration)" from the OutputDirectory (for all configurations) to achieve this.

     "What are the benefits of OCaml as a programming language" is indeed an opinion-based question, and one that I'm not going to tackle here. However, I work on the Hack team at Facebook, and have worked closely with the Flow team, so I can answer the question I think you intended to ask: "Why did Facebook pick OCaml to build Hack and Flow?"

     • The biggest reason is that OCaml has brilliant support for defining your own datatypes, and then pattern matching on them. Most of what Hack and Flow do are operations over various forms of an AST, and having a really nice way to express "if you see this kind of node with that kind of node inside it, do this thing" is invaluable. Take a look at the definition of subtyping in Hack -- it's certainly complicated, but at its heart it's just a big pattern match over a pair of types, and would be unreadably complex in any language without pattern matching.
     • OCaml is largely a functional language, with great support for first-class functions and immutable data structures. Similarly to the above, when you're doing typechecking, you end up doing a lot of different kinds of maps and folds over AST nodes, and functional languages express that really concisely. For example, typing a block of code is literally just a fold_left over the statements it contains.
     • But it's not purely functional. It's "impure" -- sometimes, mutable state, using exceptions, or similar is just the nicest way to express something. But most importantly, it means that you don't need any sort of complicated acrobatics or mental model switch or anything to call into C functions via an FFI. Both Hack and Flow use the same model for multithreading: a specially mmap'd region shared between different fork'd processes, containing a shared, lockless hash table. That's the sort of thing I wouldn't want to express in any language except C -- and that's exactly what we do. The OCaml code can call a couple magic functions without being any the wiser that it's actually C under the hood. (As an aside, I'm going to do a tech talk in January about how exactly our multithreading works, along with some other bits of Hack implementation details -- it's really cool, but hard to grasp without an intro, even if the code is open source!)

     This question was downvoted, and I hope I won't lose scarce rep points by answering it. I can't speak for the Shiny development team, and I'm only a novice Shinyapps developer, but ...

     It seems to me that Shiny aims to make it easy for for R programmers to build small to medium-sized, self-contained, web-based graphic-centric interactive data-analysis displays, without adding an unreasonable amount of code to what they wrote to do their actual work, i.e. the analysis. This is a fairly common requirement for researchers and practitioners (as opposed to full-time professional developers) coming from the R heritage and culture (stats and data science). Shiny achieves this aim pretty well!

     You can find out more about the kinds of problems that Shiny aims to solve by going to the source. Note that it says Turn your analyses into interactive web applications, not Build a full-service website with interactive chat and a backing store. It sounds as if you want something different in scale and kind, and you may be wasting time by trying to shoehorn your requirement into the Shiny problem/solution space. I've occasionally hammered nails into wood using a pair of pliers because my toolbox was at the bottom of the ladder, but that didn't make it the right thing to do!

     Functional and object oriented designs make different types of extensions easy. Given a discriminated union in a functional setting, it's easy to define any number of functions which work on that type, but it's hard to add additional cases to the type, since that would require going back to add the additional case to each function which pattern matches on the type. On the other hand, given a base type (or interface) an OO setting, it's easy to add new subtypes, but adding new operations to the base type is hard, since it potentially requires modifying existing subtypes to add an implementation of the new operation to each one.

     Depending on the type of extensibility that's most relevant to the task at hand, either the functional or the object oriented approach may make more sense, so it's nice to have both options available. One popular approach is to use a functional approach "in the small" and an OO approach "in the large" (e.g. it's mentioned in this podcast with Luke Hoban).
