    According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "employment of interpreters and translators is expected to grow 18% from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations." With a certificate in translation and interpreting, graduates can work as independent contractors, staff translators or interpreters in different companies and institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations, subcontractors for different translation and interpreting agencies, among other options. 1.     With the increased use of new technologies and the web, translators and interpreters can work from anywhere in the world for international companies. Most translation work is commissioned and delivered via email. With regard to interpreting, in certain settings assignments are provided telephonically or remotely via video (VRI – video remote interpreting).

    In addition to professional ethics and standards of practice, the courses in the certificate offer many opportunities for students to define, discuss, and explore ethical issues and dilemmas related to language mediation in today’s complex world.

    Since this is an undergraduate certificate, the U.S. educational prerequisite is a high school diploma (or GED). If you are an international student, please make sure you forward a copy of your high school diploma to the Director of Translator and Interpreter Training, Cristiano Mazzei (cmazzei@umass.edu). High proficiency in English and a Language Other Than English (LOTE) is required. Please refer to the our Certificate Guidelinesand carefully review the information on language proficiency. Students must complete 15 credits in order to receive the Online Certificate in Translation and interpreting. They must pass each course with a grade of C or higher to be eligible for the certificate. Students can also elect to enroll in certain courses only to meet their specific needs for continuing education.

    Our 15-credit certificate starting fall 2021 is approximately $8,000 plus fees. Check our Certificate Guidelines (page 4) for an overview of the courses in the certificate, sequence, and much more.
