Polls close in Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia. Indiana, Kentucky and South Carolina should report quickly in favour of Donald Trump, and Vermont and Virginia should report quickly for Joe Biden. However, Georgia, Ohio and North Carolina are much tighter. If Mr Biden doesn’t get a big win, i...

Polls close in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, which should all be declared for Mr Trump relatively quickly. Polls also close in Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, which should all declare for Mr Biden relatively quickly. Then there’s a glut of states which are very likely to eventuall...

Polls close in Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, which are quick counting, and likely to go for Mr Trump. Meanwhile, Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico and New York will also close their polls, and are likely to go for Mr Biden, though if the Democrat has done badly in the Midwest, expect Minnesota to be delayed. Whi...

Some more states unlikely to declare results close. Iowa is likely to be very close, and the final ballots won’t even arrive until next Monday. Nevada is similarly close, and it’s possible we won’t get a projection until much later in the night. Montana and Utah are more likely to give us results earlier, and both will probably go for Mr Trump. Thi...

Mr Biden is expected to take California, Washington and Oregon, while Mr Trump is expected to take Idaho. If we do get results from North Carolina on the night, this is when we can start expecting to see them. Similarly, if Mr Biden has outperformed his polls, we may hear from Ohio around now.

Hawaii will go likely to Mr Biden when polls close, and Alaska likely to Mr Trump – but while Hawaii results will be fast, Alaska won’t actually confirm its final results until next Tuesday. Georgia is still unlikely to be called by this stage, but, if the race isn’t close, this is where we might find out.

We may still be waiting for results from all the swing states, especially if it’s tight. At this point, Mr Biden could be ahead, but won’t have enough votes to get to 270. The three key states to watch are Florida, North Carolina and Arizona. All could declare results now, which would help us understand the direction of the night. Mr Trump realisti...

Wisconsin should finally declare results now. If the other states haven’t declared yet, this might be key to solidifying a Biden lead. This is also likely to be when any Trump attempts to stop votes being counted begin in earnest. It’s not clear whether they’ll work, but it could well delay results further. There’s also a possibility we’ll start to...
