In its most basic terms, the role of public law is to regulate the relationship between the state and individuals. In addition, public law refers to the state’s special powers to run the country; meaning its power to enforce, apply, implement, make, repeal and amend the law.
Public law is a set of rules that govern the relationships between private individuals (like you) or private organisations (like a business or charity), and public bodies (like Government departments and local authorities) or private organisations exercising a public function.
When studying public law, however, it is very important to develop as soon as possible a sense of how the different elements fit together. Topics such as the rule of law and parliamentary supremacy will be relevant in a variety of different contexts as a wide range of public law topics are studied.
Students interested in public law should take courses, foundational and advanced, in (1) government structure and processes, (2) individual rights within governing structures, and (3) particular fields of public regulation.
