According to this article in Psychology Today, floundering is the number one cause of unhappiness in college students. High school and College students want to succeed; when they don’t know some of the key factors that could make them successful, it causes them to “flounder” as they struggle to make sense of their future.
Both struggling and floundering people have a mental illness, but struggling people manage to report moderate to high levels of well-being whereas floundering people experience low levels. Keyes and Lopez say that the “languishing” state is where many mental health patients are left after their therapies/treatments are finished.
