Night is narrated by Eliezer, a Jewish teenager who, when the memoir begins, lives in his hometown of Sighet, in Hungarian Transylvania. Eliezer studies the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) and the Kabbalah (a doctrine of Jewish mysticism).
In the fifties and sixties, adults born before or during World War II showed a careless and patronizing indifference toward what is so inadequately called the Holocaust. That is no longer true. Back then, few publishers had the courage to publish books on that subject. Today, such works are on most book lists.
Night is Wiesel's memoir of the Holocaust as told through the eyes of a 15-year-old. The author was awarded the Congressional Medal of Freedom in 1985, and in 1986 the Nobel Peace Prize for his enduring efforts to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive so that such a tragedy would not repeat itself.
This definitive edition features a new translation from the original French by Wiesel's wife and frequent translator, Marion Wiesel. Night is an unmistakably autobiographical account of the author's own gruesome experiences in Nazi Germany's death camps.
