Unlike the previous year when it had been outsold by the Esprit models, the base model was the best-selling Firebird in 1971, and total production was 23,021. The base price for the car was $3,047, which marked the first year that all Firebirds had an MSRP above $3,000.
Though it was no longer the best selling Firebird, the Esprit was still putting up good sales numbers. Total production for the year was 20,185, and the cars started at $3,416.
Sales of the Formula 400 held relatively stagnant from the previous year, and production was at 7,802, which was an increase of only 1.22 percent from 1970. The base price for these cars was $3,445.
Despite the new engines (and newly designed exterior decals), the Trans Am was the only Firebird model that showed a drop in sales. Total production of the cars was only 2,116, which represented a 33.79 percent drop from the year before. This may have been influenced by the fact that the starting price for the Trans Am was $4,595.

- Final Model. The 2002 model was the final model for the Firebird WS6. It’s also widely considered to be the best and the fastest of them all. The car features the intake manifold from the LS6, which along with the Ram Air induction took its 5.7-liter LS1 to a total output of 325 horsepower and more.
- Production Numbers. The early Firebird WS6s are extremely rare cars, as Pontiac didn’t record a great sales run during those times. However, there are an estimated 2,500 of the 31,000 Firebirds sold in 1996 that came equipped with the WS6 package.
- Performance. Car and Driver tested out a WS6 Formula against a Chevrolet Camaro SS and a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra in 1996 and the car performed poorly. The Formula’s run of 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 102 mph was the slowest of the three.
- Interior. The interior of the Firebird WS6 had a mixed reception. While some liked the curvy dashboard and the accompanying red instrument lighting, others didn’t think it was good enough.
