Nov 8, 2021 · The Markkula Center’s Ethical Decision-Making Framework is a tool designed to 1) help users see and identify a broader set of ethical issues than they would have without it, and 2) guide users through a process that includes both pre-decision and post-decision steps.
- WHAT IS ETHICS? : Ethics provides a set of standards for behavior that helps us decide how we ought to act in a range of situations. In a sense, we can say that ethics is all about making choices, and about providing reasons why we should make these choices.
- TRADITIONAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE FIELD OF ETHICS: There are many systems of ethics, and numerous ways to think about right and wrong actions or good and bad character.
- FRAMEWORKS FOR ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING: Making good ethical decisions requires a trained sensitivity to ethical issues and a practiced method for exploring the ethical aspects of a decision and weighing the considerations that should impact our choice of a course of action.

This framework is to be used as a guide, rather than a “recipe”. Ethical decision-making is a process, best done in a caring and compassionate environment. It will take time, and may require more than one meeting with patient, family, and team members. Feel free to share this framework with others.
