And you can make a mid sounding patch sound pretty decent with good writing. So I'd be spending the majority of your time learning music writing. The virtual synth that helped me the most to understand synthesis was Vital. If you go through a few videos, you will understand the concepts of synthesis and then you can transfer them to another synthesizer. In my case, I like the sounds of SurgeXT (my favorite synth) and the U-he synths that I have tried.
