     IDictionary is for key->value maps, ICollection is for sets of similar objects.

     ICollection is an interface for collections of similar objects: the controls on a form, the elements in a list, the attributes in an XML tag, and so on. As of .NET 2.0, there's a generic version, so you can refer to a collection of integers as ICollection<int>.

     IDictionary is an interface for mapping one type of object or value to another. It works like a real dictionary, or a phone book: you have a "key" in mind like a person’s name, and when you look it up, you get some information that’s identified by that key, like an address or phone number. Each key can only be listed once, although two different keys are still allowed to have the same value. This is also generic in .NET 2.0, so a dictionary whose keys are strings and whose values are integers would be IDictionary<string,int>.

     A dictionary is actually a collection of key/value pairs: you can use an IDictionary<int,string> as an ICollection<KeyValuePair<int,string>>, and you can access the keys and values as separate collections with the Keys and Values properties.

     Both ICollection and IDictionary are unordered, meaning that although you can retrieve the elements in some order with the CopyTo method or a foreach loop, that order has no special meaning, and it might change for no apparent reason. That’s the main difference between ICollection and IList: a list lets you put items in specific positions, just like an array, and they stay there until you move them.

     First, AFAIK, there isn't any list that takes two type parameters - so your List could either be a List<int> or List<string> (or a SortedList<int,string>, but that's a different class).

     A Tuple<T1, T2>

     holds two values - one int and one string in this case. You can use a Tuple to bind together items (that might be of different types). This may be useful in many situations, like, for instance, you want to return more than one value from a method.

     I personally hate the Item1, Item2 property names, so I would probably use a wrapper class around Tuples in my code.

     A Dictionary<TKey, TValue>

     is a collection of KeyValuePair<TKey, TValue>. A Dictionary maps keys to values, so that you can have, for instance, a dictionary of people and for each person have their SSN as a key.

     A List<T>

     is a collection of T. You can get individual items by using the index, the Find method, or simply LINQ (since it implements IEnumerable<T>).

     1.If I have something like Foo o = new Foo(); inside the method, does that mean that each time the timer ticks, I'm creating a new object and a new reference to that object?

     Yes.

     2.If I have string foo = null and then I just put something temporal in foo, is it the same as above?

     If you are asking if the behavior is the same then yes.

     3.Does the garbage collector ever delete the object and the reference or objects are continually created and stay in memory?

     The memory used by those objects is most certainly collected after the references are deemed to be unused.

     4.If I just declare Foo o; and not point it to any instance, isn't that disposed when the method ends?

     No, since no object was created then there is no object to collect (dispose is not the right word).

     5.If I want to ensure that everything is deleted, what is the best way of doing it

     If the object's class implements IDisposable then you certainly want to greedily call Dispose as soon as possible. The using keyword makes this easier because it calls Dispose automatically in an exception-safe way.

     Other than that there really is nothing else you need to do except to stop using the object. If the reference is a local variable then when it goes out of scope it will be eligible for collection.1 If it is a class level variable then you may need to assign null to it to make it eligible before the containing class is eligible.

     1This is technically incorrect (or at least a little misleading). An object can be eligible for collection long before it goes out of scope. The CLR is optimized to collect memory when it detects that a reference is no longer used. In extreme cases the CLR can collect an object even while one of its methods is still executing!

     Update:

     Here is an example that demonstrates that the GC will collect objects even though they may still be in-scope. You have to compile a Release build and run this outside of the debugger.

     The .NET garbage collector takes care of all this for you.

     It is able to determine when objects are no longer referenced and will (eventually) free the memory that had been allocated to them.

     Objects are eligable for garbage collection once they go out of scope become unreachable (thanks ben!). The memory won't be freed unless the garbage collector believes you are running out of memory.

     For managed resources, the garbage collector will know when this is, and you don't need to do anything.

     For unmanaged resources (such as connections to databases or opened files) the garbage collector has no way of knowing how much memory they are consuming, and that is why you need to free them manually (using dispose, or much better still the using block)

     If objects are not being freed, either you have plenty of memory left and there is no need, or you are maintaining a reference to them in your application, and therefore the garbage collector will not free them (in case you actually use this reference you maintained)

     Span<T> is stack-only in nature while Memory<T> can exist on the heap.

     Span<T> is a new type we are adding to the platform to represent contiguous regions of arbitrary memory, with performance characteristics on par with T[]. Its APIs are similar to the array, but unlike arrays, it can point to either managed or native memory, or to memory allocated on the stack.

     Memory <T> is a type complementing Span<T>. As discussed in its design document, Span<T> is a stack-only type. The stack-only nature of Span<T> makes it unsuitable for many scenarios that require storing references to buffers (represented with Span<T>) on the heap, e.g. for routines doing asynchronous calls.

     To address this problem, we will provide a set of complementary types, intended to be used as general purpose exchange types representing, just like Span <T>, a range of arbitrary memory, but unlike Span <T>

     these types will not be stack-only, at the cost of significant performance penalties for reading and writing to the memory.

     In the sample above, the Memory <byte> is used to represent the buffer. It is a regular type and can be used in methods doing asynchronous calls. Its Span property returns Span<byte>, but the returned value does not get stored on the heap during asynchronous calls, but rather new values are produced from the Memory<T> value. In a sense, Memory<T> is a factory of Span<T>.

     That is an internal implementation detail of that type; it does not expose enough information externally for you to compute the size of all of it's members (assuming you're interested not in the size of the instance, but also in the size of the objects it owns as well).

     You could, in theory, use reflection (or even unsafe pointers) to access the private instance variables, to try to find the size of the internal buffer, as well as the other state it is holding onto, but that would need to be very tightly tied to a specific implementation of the dictionary. It wouldn't be able to support new implementations of the class with new versions of the framework, and would need to be written to handle any changes that have been made over all of the existing versions.
