Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) means taking the antibiotic doxycycline after sex to prevent getting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Recent studies have shown that taking DoxyPEP can reduce your chance of getting syphilis and chlamydia by about three-quarters (74-88%), and gonorrhea by about half (55-57%).

• Doxycycline can be taken as often as every day, depending on frequency of condomless sexual exposure, but no more than 200 mg should be taken within a 24-hour period. • Doxycycline should be taken with fluids and patients should remain upright for 30 minutes after the dose. Taking doxycycline with food may increase tolerability.
For chlamydia, doxycycline is the preferred treatment. A test-of-cure is recommended for all cases of pharyngeal gonorrhea and for rectal chlamydia if treated with azithromycin.
