- Their presence in stool can be an indicator of fecal contamination of a food or water source, and does not rule-out the presence of other parasites. Entamoeba gingivalis is also considered nonpathogenic, but is found in about 95% of patients with gum disease and about 50% of patients with healthy gums.

Entamoeba gingivalis is a non-pathogenic ameba that inhabits the human oral cavity and occasionally other sites. Although it is often found in conjunction with periodontal disease, no causative association has been definitively identified.
Entamoeba gingivalis is an opportunistic Amoebozoa [citation needed] (reported by some as an effect of disease; not a cause [hence status as a commensal]) and is the first amoeba in humans to be described. It is found in the mouth inside the gingival pocket biofilm near the base of the teeth, and in periodontal pockets.

Oct 29, 2018 · Entamoeba gingivalis is able to engulf one or more human cells at the time by a yet-undescribed mechanism (Figure (Figure1). 1). In the observed samples, cells around the amoebae present an altered cellular content, suggesting E. gingivalis can trigger signals leading to modification of human cells.

May 19, 2021 · Objective. To describe epidemiological features, genetic diversity, and associations with oral microbiome signatures of E. gingivalis colonisation in Tanzanians with non-oral/non-dental diseases. Methods. DNAs from 92 oral washings from 52 participants were subject to metabarcoding of ribosomal genes.

These include Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba hartmanii, Entamoeba polecki, Entamoeba gingivalis, Endolimax nana, and Iodamoeba butschlii. The finding of one of these organisms in a stool sample is significant for several reasons; it indicates exposure to fecal contamination with inherent risk of exposure to other pathogenic organisms.
Oct 7, 2022 · Background. This study investigated the prevalence and relative abundance of Entamoeba gingivalis ( E. gingivalis) in Chinese young patients with different periodontal conditions, and its association with subgingival microbial composition, periodontal parameters, and cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid. Methods.
