  2. Oct 3, 2014 · The best elements of the documentary “Harmontown” capture the unique raw energy of Harmon. Most people in Hollywood are overly concerned about what you think of them. Harmon is the kind of guy who admonishes hecklers who scream out “I love you” because he doesn’t love himself. Advertisement.

On the Internet, a new movie, television show, performer, or single can become the greatest thing of all time in less than 24 hours. We don't need the slow-cooked satisfaction of understanding because our cultural microwave heats up hits in seconds.

Take Community, a great show created by Dan Harmon, someone nearly as entertaining as his finished product. But the idea of crafting a documentary tribute to the creator's comedic underdog sounds both plausible and premature. Fans would be all over it — but would it be a good movie?

Harmontown, a film structured around the writer's 2013 podcast tour, is aware of hagiography's deadly effects. So instead of bowing at Harmon's alter, the film grapples with fandom and Harmon's turbulent career without ever letting either off the hook. Claims of genius don't inflate Harmon's ego, they devour it, leaving behind an anxiety-ridden performer addicted to the good vibes of a crowd. For anyone who has dabbled in the creative, Harmontown is both sweet and terrifying.

An on-going gag pulls back the curtain on how awkward it is to have someone make a documentary on your life. “Hey, were you here all night?” Harmon wonders when the camera finds him entering his car. Berkeley is not an observer, he's participant, keeping Harmon comfortable and candid.

Harmontown is a surprisingly frank portrait of a modern artist, complimented by the natural hilarity of the podcast crew. As Harmon notes, he's a villain in his own story, and it's guys like Crittenden who fill a room with light whenever they enter. Berkeley finds room to explore all of the side player's stories, as well as the fans, many of whom o...
