What is hospice care? Increasingly, people are choosing hospice care at the end of life. Hospice care focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a person with a serious illness who is approaching the end of life. At some point, it may not be possible to cure a serious illness, or a patient may choose not to undergo certain treatments.
Hospice is care that is given to those with six months or less to live. Hospice care is different from curative care. Curative care seeks to cure or treat the illness. However, with hospice, patients are given comfort care only to manage pain and other symptoms of the illness.

Hospice care often includes palliative care, but they are not the same thing. Hospice care is given when a person’s cancer cannot be controlled by cancer treatment. Hospice focuses on managing symptoms and side effects. Hospice care is given to people during their last 6 months of life.

The hospice benefit allows you and your family to stay together in the comfort of your home unless you need care in an inpatient facility. If your hospice team determines that you need inpatient care, they'll make the arrangements for your stay. If you need to get inpatient care at a hospital, your hospice provider must make the arrangements.
