Macbeth Full Play Summary. The play begins with the brief appearance of a trio of witches and then moves to a military camp, where the Scottish King Duncan hears the news that his generals, Macbeth and Banquo, have defeated two separate invading armies—one from Ireland, led by the rebel Macdonwald, and one from Norway.
Banquo warns Macbeth that “instruments of darkness” often tell half-truths “to win us to our harm” (1.3.125–126). While the Witches have prophesied great futures for both Macbeth and Banquo, Banquo is less inspired and intrigued than Macbeth and would rather leave the matter safely alone.
Banquo asks the sisters to prophesy to him, too, and they tell him that though he shall never be King himself, his children will take the throne. As Macbeth seeks to know more, the witches vanish. Ross and Angus arrive to greet Macbeth with his new title; the general is amazed to be called Thane of Cawdor, but it is explained to him.
