Helmert orthometric height method
- NAVD is measured using the Helmert orthometric height method. This method calculates the location of the geoid (which approximates mean sea level) from modeled local gravity. The NAVD 88 model is based on then-available measurements and remains fixed, regardless of later improved geoid models.
